Harvey's Knob Hawk Watch

September 26, 2026

Join the Hawk Watch at Harvey’s Knob on Sept 26. Raptors migrate in the fall along the Blue Ridge flight corridor, and we’re fortunate to have two Hawk Watches within reach: Rockfish Gap on Afton Mountain and Harvey’s Knob, south of Buchanan on the Parkway.

Expert educators and committed Hawk Watch counters are at the sites daily from mid-August through early November. Peak numbers occur in mid- to late September, due to the very large numbers of Broad-winged Hawks. Osprey and Bald Eagle are also in flight over the ridges in mid-September.

Join fellow Club members as we participate in the count at Harvey’s Knob on September 26, starting at 10am. Take Route 43 east from Buchanan for 4 miles and hop onto the Parkway heading south. The overlook is located at milepost 95.3, offering spectacular views as raptors kettle over the Blue Ridge.

Bring binoculars or a spotting scope, a chair, sunscreen, drinks and snacks, and a hat for hawk-watching, and stay as long as you like. You can also keep up with daily raptor counts for both the Harvey’s Knob and Rockfish Gap sites on HawkCount, a raptor migration database.
